Her characteristic shape and detail make the Nautilus one of the most exciting submarines of all times. For many submarine enthusiasts, including us at Engel ModelBau, the Nautilus has been a childhood dream since Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea. This model makes this fantastic idea come true!
Model
More than 3,000 rivets on its upper hull and wheel house as well as the saw shaped fins and raker arch, give this model its very impressive looks. Like all Engel submarines this kit comes with glass fiber hull, complete set of fittings, hardware pack and dive system.
Three detailed plans and comprehensive instructions allow the experienced modeller an efficient assembly of the kit.
Hull
The hull unit consists of upper and lower hull sections, middle deck and bulk head, all made of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP). Tail fin and lower hull section are laminated in a single part, thereby ensuring exact alignment and correct fixture of the rudder. Rakers, fins, dive planes and skiff are all cast in resin. Additionally, window frames and “crocodile eyes” on the wheel house are also resin cast parts.
The middle deck forms a Water Tight Compartment (WTC) within the lower hull. The WTC is reinforced by steel inlays and houses all technical components such as dive system, main drive, batteries and R/C. An opening measuring 560 x 75 mm allows access to the interior components. This hatch is closed by a 3 mm thick aluminium plate sealed with a rubber gasket.
Fittings
The ram is made of machined acrylic. Hatches, clamps, anchor and bollards are also prefabricated. Saloon and wheel house windows, as well as the lamp covers, are made of clear plastic.
Main Drive
The model is powered by a 12V electric motor with pre-assembled, ball raced gear box. Included in this set are the prop shaft, gasket, coupling and solid brass propeller.
Diving System
The kit comes complete with the “Thousandfold” approved dive system "Preisenhammer", consisting of two Piston Tanks with a total volume of 1000ml, ready-made switch unit, pressure switch and all necessary cables and connectors.
Kit includes:
• Hull made of GRP (glass fiber reinforced Polyester), 4 parts including upper and lower hull, pressure proof compartment and bulk head
• Highly detailed set of fittings of which most are cast in resin, such as:
- bridge with shingles and top hatch, crocodile eyes with lash rings
- rakers, fins and dive planes
- salon windows
- skiff with lamella cover
- hatches, bollards and cleats
• Transparent windows for conning tower, "crocodile eyes" and panoramic windows (vac formed)
• 12V main drive unit with ball bearing
• Drive shaft and prop made of brass
• Base plates and supports CNC-machined
• Brass rudder plates CNC-machined
• Aluminum lid, support plate and all gaskets required
• All necessary accessories (such as links, bolts, screws etc.)
• Ballast (lead, approx. 3.7 kg)
• Polyester Resin with Micro Balloons
• Instructions and detailed plans in English, 3 sheets all drawn 1:1
• Complete diving system with two Piston Tanks and electronic control unit, all running on 12V.
The NAUTILUS is available with all four versions of the ENGEL Diving System:

kit with Diving System TmaxS item no. 1597-TMXS
The standard version of the kit also includes the complete diving system consisting of two Piston Tanks with 750 ml each and an electronic switch unit TAE featuring the AutoStop and AutoTrim device.
AutoStop means, that the pumps stop automatically as soon as the tanks are fully emptied or filled. AutoTrim allows you to bring the model manualy into a state of perfect buoyancy.
In addition, the TAE System incorporates a Fail Safe device which means, that the model emerges as soon as the R/C command is interrupted for longer than approx. 4 seconds.
System type TAES is based on Type TAE but incorporates a Static Depth Controller in addition.
System type TAE can be operated by a control stick on your transmitter or (better) an ON/OFF/ON switch (via a proportional channel).
For system type TAES a single proportional slider becomes necessary.
System type Tmax offers proportional control of both Piston Tanks. This newly developped version allows for a new dimension for controlling a static diving model submarine.
The Tmax System can be operated via one, two or three R/C channels. However, in order to enjoy the entire functionality of this unit three proportional R/C channels are necessary. This setup will require an analog switch (3 positions: on/off/on) and two proportional slider switches, all to be operated via genuine proportional channels.
For the TmaxS version this setup is an absolut must have.
Therefore, for less sophistiated R/C systems we recommend system type TAE or TAES. For computerised R/C transmitters which allow for installation of two slider switches and offer at least six proportional channels system type Tmax and TmaxS are first choice.
All switch units, regardless of system type, are pre-soldered and ready-to-run. All diving systems including the ballast tanks and the switch units have passed rigorous quality and functional checks.
OPTIONAL
Lighting Unit item no. 1597-1
This feature allows you to illuminate the "crocodile eyes" as well as the saloon windows and their surrounding lamps. The lamps can either be lit in the wheel house only, or together with the saloon windows. Lighting adds a very special effect for night cruising of this very special model.
An additional option includes ready-built, resin cast lighting elements (with LEDs), electric switch unit, cables and mounting parts.
