SSBN-599 Patrick Henry |
 |
The Patrick Henry was the second nuclear powered submarine of the U.S. Navy fitted with ballistic Polaris rockets. The vessel was equipped with state-of-the-art navigation systems in those days which allowed submerged travelling without having to resurface for position taking.
Her keel was laid down at Groton/USA by Electric Boat on 26. May 1958 and commissioned on 9. April 1960. She commenced her first deterrent patrol already in December of that year. With her arrival off Holy Loch, Scotland in March 1961 the crew had set a new record, travelling submerged for 66 days and 22 hours.
The single S5W pressurised water reactor combined with two turbines generated 30,000 HP. Her drop shaped hull allowed a maximum speed of 16 knots when surfaced, and up 22 knots while submerged.
Model
The Patrick Henry is the most popular static model submarine since it was first launched in 1979 with several thousand kits sold. This sub is fitted with fore and aft ballast tanks for full buoyancy control. Her single hull design and simple interior setup allow progressive building even for a novice to submarine modelling.
Furthermore, the model (with conning tower not being mounted) is ideal for fitting “dummies” such as a shark fin or an underwater camera.
Hull Unit
The hull is laminated in GRP in a single piece and only requires the bulkhead to be cut to shape and glued-in. Conning tower, tail cover and bulk head are also made of glass fibre. The single hull design constitutes the WTC (water tight compartment) in which all interior components such as diving system, R/C, batteries and main drive are located. On the upper side of the hull is an opening, 560 mm long and up to 75 mm wide, which allows access to the model’s interior. This opening is closed by a aluminium lid and covered with the conning tower/rocket hatch section. Prop shaft, gasket and linkages for the rudders and dive planes remain easily accessible through the tail cover.
Main Drive
The model is powered by a 6V electric motor with pre-assembled, ball raced gear box. Included in this set are the prop shaft, gasket, coupling and brass propeller.
Diving System
The kit comes complete with the thousandfold approved diving system "Preisenhammer", consisting of two Piston Tanks with a total volume of 1500ml, ready-made switch unit, pressure switch as well as all necessary cables and connectors.
Kit includes:
• Hull, conning tower, tail cover and bulk head made of glass fibre (GRP)
• Drive motor with ball raced gear box, pre-assembled
• Drive shaft, coupling and prop, all made of brass
• Fins, rudders and dive planes pre-cut from PVC
• All necessary accessories, such as links, screws, gaskets, tubings etc.
• Ballast weight (rolled lead)
• Instructions and plan drawing
• Diving System with two piston tanks, electronic switch unit, pressure switch, cables and connectors
The Patrick Henry is available with all four versions of ENGEL Diving Systems:
kit with Diving System TAE item no. 1590-TAE
kit with Diving System TAES item no. 1590-TAES
kit with Diving System Tmax item no. 1590-TMX
kit with Diving System TmaxS item no. 1590-TMXS
The standard version of the kit also includes the complete diving system consisting of two Piston Tanks with 750 ml each and an electronic switch unit TAE featuring the AutoStop and AutoTrim device.
AutoStop means, that the pumps stop automatically as soon as the tanks are fully emptied or filled.
AutoTrim allows you to bring the model manualy into a state of perfect buoyancy.
In addition, the TAE System incorporates a Fail Safe device which means, that the model emerges as soon as the R/C command is interrupted for longer than approx. 4 seconds.
Furthermore, System type TAES is based on Type TAE but incorporates a Static Depth Controller in addition.
System type TAE can be operated by a control stick on your transmitter or (better) an ON/OFF/ON switch (via a proportional channel).
For system type TAES a single proportional slider becomes necessary.
System type Tmax offers proportional control of both Piston Tanks. This newly developped version allows for a new dimension for controlling a static diving model submarine.
The Tmax System can be operated via one, two or three R/C channels. However, in order to enjoy the entire functionality of this unit three proportional R/C channels are necessary. This setup will require an analog switch (3 positions: on/off/on) and two proportional slider switches, all to be operated via genuine proportional channels.
For the TmaxS version this setup is an absolut must have.
Therefore, for less sophistiated R/C systems we recommend system type TAE and TAES. For computerised R/C transmitters which allow for installation of two slider switches and offer at least six proportional channels system type Tmax and TmaxS are first choice.
All switch units, regardless of system type, are pre-soldered and ready-to-run. All diving systems including the ballast tanks and the switch units have passed rigorous quality and functional checks.
OPTIONAL
